Biography:
Mark Braunias was a New Zealand artist. He exhibited extensively for over 36 years since graduating with a BFA from Canterbury University, Ilam School of Fine Arts, Christchurch in 1988. Braunias was the inaugural winner of the national TheArts House Trust Art Award in 1992 and received a Fulbright NZ Scholar-Visual Arts scholarship to complete an artist residency at Headlands Center For The Arts in San Francisco during 2011. He also completed artist residencies at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (2002), William Hodges Fellowship, Invercargill (2005), Tylee Cottage, Whanganui (2007) and the Dunedin School of Art (2019). In 2021, Braunias was awarded the national Parkin Drawing Award.
His work also appeared in curated public gallery exhibitions including A very peculiar practice (City Gallery, Wellington, 1995), Gruesome (Robert McDougal Art Gallery, Christchurch, 1999), The Cartoon Show (Auckland Art Gallery, 2002), Field of Vision: A survey of Mark Braunias (The Arts House Trust, Pah Homestead, Auckland, 2016) and Ena Snuggles (Objectspace, Auckland, 2020).
His work is held in public gallery and private collections including : Te Papa Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Sarjeant Art Gallery, Tauranga Art Gallery, Invercargill Art Gallery and Museum, Ashburton Art Gallery, Auckland University, Canterbury University, Massey University, Lincoln University, Fletcher Trust Collection, Art House Trust Collection and the State Library Of Queensland.
