SWS vs Wild West (acrylic on studio wall) Headlands Center For The Arts, Sausalito, California.

12 August- 31 August 2011.

Utilizing a second wall at the residency this drawing parodies a High School blackboard lesson plan.

A large cluster of figurative and obscure structures are seemingly controlled by an unidentified flying object to the far right of the diagram. Science fiction is presented in an illustrated comic book style focusing on the theory of gravity and its effect on every object in relation to the other.

Children's Charter II (acrylic and ink on Gallery Walls) Outer Spaces, Christchurch Art Gallery.

15 December 2015 - present.

The post 2011 Christchurch earthquake had caused some damage to the wall work which was initially completed in 2010. The artist was asked to return in December 2015 to repair the work prior to the re-opening of the Gallery (closed since 22 February 2011). After quickly restoring the damage it was decided to continue the work on the other side of the hallway. New figures emerged showing them moving towards the light as they traveled back to the entrance from whence they came.

Ashburton Art Gallery (2007)

Congo is a Sly Grogger (acrylic and ink on Gallery wall with various attachments and projected animation) Ashburton Art Gallery, Ashburton. 10 March - 8 April 2007.

This exhibition was on loan from the Southland Museum from a show held there in 2005. While many of the paintings were transported a new wall drawing was created on site in Ashburton.

Across the length of one wall, drawings , paintings and attachments overlapped one another while a video projection screened directly over the top. The video interlaced the making of previous wall drawings with short animation clips of drawings ‘moving’.

The wall drawing composed of figurative forms sketched loosely above paintings and next to each other. This was further enhanced by paintings made directly on the wall with similar figurative shapes enclosed inside their borders. This created different levels of spatial depth which was further compromised by the moving images flickering into them.

This chaos made the entire wall seem as if it was in the mode of breathing. It also was the beginning of a phase where animation became a part of the practice.

Ramp Gallery, Hamilton (2006)

Dear Uncle Albert there are no more Gurus (acrylic and ink on Gallery Wall with attachments) Ramp Gallery, Wintec, Hamilton. 7 November - 24 November 2006.

A music stand in the center of the space holds many of the drawings used to orchestrate the low level composition on the walls. The assorted images trail in a semi circle around to a much larger figure playing a guitar connected to an amplifier. The 70’s Rock God observing the noise of feedback in visual form.

Above the drawings is a painting on canvas made in the aesthetic of a pop music poster. It announces the band “Somethin’ Else to perform.” The venue is hidden by two large abstracted flowers. Further along the wall an Indian man with a heading above his head reads “2nd Guru”. His speech bubble sprouts “Its only rock n roll”.

Uncle Albert from ‘Coronation Street’ makes a brief appearance. His hands raised above his head in either surrender or acclaim. Elsewhere a Beatle from the film “Help” bangs a cymbal. Its just another “Day in the life”.

Southland Art Gallery, invercargill (2006)

Congo/Sly- Grogger (acrylic and ink with attachments on Gallery wall) Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Invercargill. 24 February - 20 May 2006.

An immersive long wall where a cascade of cartoonish figures shapes and words spill out from each other. The intention was to create a brightly coloured and at times garish primal ooze. A physic scream somewhere between a Yellow Submarine and an irritated intestine. Perhaps the celestial toilet wall as scribbled by Donald Duck and or Pooh Bear?

The writing is on the wall and the compressed space is squeezing forms into an unintelligible hysteria of the misunderstood. Jackson Pollock wearing a beanie while reading ‘Beano’ comics collapses in a drunken stupor.

Show Gallery, Wellington (2005)

Heavy Breathers (acrylic and ink on Gallery wall) Show Gallery, Wellington. 8 November - 12 December 2005.

A collaborative wall project with Ben Buchanan.

Working from opposite sides of the room the collaboration evolved towards a middle wall where the two styles combined and over-layed within each other.

Interesting connections were made and explored between the hand drawn ‘sketches’ and the stenciled flat vinyl. The drip of a painted line was echoed by the mechanical edge of a cut plastic rectangle. Cartoon figures collided with flat abstract forms and created a dialogue between differences in visual language.
